This 8 week course meets
each week at a different location in Key west to explore all the methods that it takes to paint an
exciting landscape. You will learn to train your eye to find the most
interesting spot, and then learn how to translate that to your canvas. The
student will learn what is important and when detail is necessary and
when it is not. The class focuses on training the eye to distinguish the
subtleties in lighting and shapes thus creating a dance of colors and shapes
that at some times soothe and at other times excites the viewer.
The first two and a half hours will be spent on
painting with the last half hour for critique and discussion. Price for the
eight week class is $125.00

Enjoy the incredible vocals of Raven Cooper every Thursday this November at The BottleCap. Showtime starts at 9:30 PM . With acoustic guitar in hand, Raven transports the audience back and forth in time with early 1900's popular ballads to current hip-hop tunes. The repertoire is very jazzy, infused with Latin, rock and at times with a funky hillbilly twist. Cooper's unique expression, passionate phrasing and dramatic vocal power make her the outstanding singer of Key West.

Presented by Susan Chaires, Esquire
In this lunch time seminar participants will learn about creative ways they can gain visibility for their art works and earn additional income, beyond the sale of the works themselves. The topics will include a discussion of the licensing process, an exploration of the variety of ways art works can be licensed for use by others, and the important terms to include, and to avoid, in the license agreement.
We will discuss specific examples of licensed art works and participants are invited to bring their own ideas and experiences.
Susan Chaires is a Washington DC based intellectual property lawyer who has assisted numerous artist clients in licensing their works for such varied uses as calendars, books, fabrics, commemorative coins and movies.

Reaction Productions presents internationally acclaimed star Varla Jean Merman in
SHUT UP SWEET CHARLOTTE
Directed by Jeffery Roberson.
Also starring Ricky Graham with Mark Meehan, Brooks Braselman, Yvette Hargis and Michael Sullivan.
The "Suthen"-drenched, critically acclaimed, award-winning production was first seen in New Orleans, Provincetown, Atlanta and a recent Palm Springs run. Conceived and guided by the inimitable talents of VARLA JEAN herself who's credited with writing the stage adaptation, direction and headlining the production alongside co-star RICKY GRAHAM, the result is a whacked out, brilliantly twisted and skewered yet right-on-the-mark drag parody of the silver screen cult film which featured the legendary BETTE DAVIS and OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND.
Varla Jean and her company of co-conspirators have created a high camp stage version of "Charlotte", a film considered by many cinema historians as the quintessential example of the "Southern Gothic Thriller". In the process, Merman navigates the cast of CHARLOTTE through to a truly "hilarity ensues" laugh-riot of an evening at the theatre. The ensemble impressively manages to both revere and (affectionately) ridicule this celluloid art form. Davis and DeHavilland fans will be delighted with their gender bending theatrical reincarnations. Enthusiasts of the original film will find themselves in hysterics over the dead-on, inspired rendering of Velma Cruther (Charlotte's devoted maid) as brilliantly delivered by BROOKS BRASELMAN in the supporting role originally portrayed by AGNES MOOREHEAD (Endora of BEWITCHED fame). The additional supporting cast includes Mark Meehan, Yvette Hargis and Michael Sullivan.

Florida Keys Community College’s Ceramics Department and its student club, Mud-Pi, will host a three-day open house extravaganza over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, November 27th-29th on the Key West Campus. The weekend centers on the “Art of the Brush” workshop, led by returning master potter and brush maker Professor Glenn Grishkoff, November 27th- 28th, from 10:00AM-4:00PM. Events also include a celebration dinner and unveiling of a mural honoring the late FKCC arts patron and local artist, Jack Baron, on Saturday evening.
Professor Grishkoff will lead interested brush makers through the process of creating exotic brushes in the most popular two-day workshops that Mud-Pi has ever presented.
“Glenn is literally back by popular demand,” says Ceramics instructor Jay Gogin. “His past workshops have been enthusiastically embraced by FKCC students and the community.”
Grishkoff’s brushes are inspired by his many trips to Japan, but have a uniquely “American West” feel that comes to this native Californian through his many years of teaching at the University of Idaho—making this workshop a truly “west meets east” experience.
All materials used to create the brushes are “green” and come from a variety of unexpected sources—from zoos to river banks to junk sales. Grishkoff spends countless hours gathering exotic animal furs, hairs, feathers, and bones, all of which are harvested in an animal-friendly manner. The handles are also made from a range of unusual materials, including bamboo, sticks, roots, and driftwood. Cords, wires, strings, and twine bind everything together to form functional art brushes, which are themselves pieces of art.
As the workshop is in progress, Gogin will be firing FKCC’s famous “Japanese Wood Kiln”—a three-day process that uses nothing but “recycled” local wood salvaged from garden trimming or storm damage.
There will be a free celebration dinner on Saturday, November 28th at 6:00PM. Afterward the Mud-Pi students will present their newest wall mural, “A Tribute to Jack Baron”, located in the ceramics glaze room. The late and beloved Jack Baron and his partner, Robert Burton, generously donated to the Florida Keys Educational Foundation, FKCC’s fundraising arm, to improve the Ceramics Department. Burton will have the honor of unveiling the mural for its first public viewing.
“Jack enlivened our island with his vibrant colors,” shares Gogin. “We feel he would be proud of the dynamic splash of Key West color that bursts from this new high fire creation.”
The open house is free and open to the public. Participation in the “Art of the Brush” workshop costs $30 for materials. For more information, contact Jay Gogin at 305-809-3223.
